Thanks so much for the movie. I think the potential for totalitarian use of

In the US, when someone brings in a car for repair--even if it is being paid by the person (not car insurance), the repair log is sent to a data base accessed by insurance companies. Some of stores will even report when you get your oil changed. They read the VIN off the car.

If someone wants to know any information and they do not have a good reason for it, I make it up. My social security number, phone number etc. It's easier than arguing with a clerk who is just doing the job in the way that she or he was told to. Later, if I want to, I will call the head of the company and ask their reason. Sometimes, it was just included on the stock form that they use but most often it's because "that's the way we always did it."

Any ideas or concern with using Gmail? I have a couple of accounts but my primary uses my first and last name as part of the email address. I also have a secondary account that has no identifying information in the email address. How much privacy do I have with a gmail account?

I am an American who watched your documentary last night on Netflix. I found it compelling and frightening. My own country which was originally fashioned as an ideal champion of individual liberty has become much less tolerant of personal rights. It is disconcerting how much information is simply "out there" and the idea of present data being used to prosecute future crimes seems to be a very distinct possibility in our future. Thank you for raising awareness and also for creating such an interesting film.

If there was a process by which, you could submit a request to have ALL your data removed from all databases, first, that would make modern life tough, and second, the cohort of the population choosing to do so would have a higher concentration of crooks, paranoids and idiots. Deciding how to selectively delete self-records takes some thinking. Some corporate databases would be no-brainers. Others... I'm not sure.

Regarding bio-metrics... imagine perfect, instant biometric recognition machines being ubiquitous. Many records, needing cross-referenced data for further identity verification, eg your mother's maiden name, become redundant.

The real tide change comes if forcing others owning your data becomes their cost rather than their benefit. Maybe identity chaff will come into being.

Fabulous doc. Clever setup. Very well done.

Funny that no one has any comments about this as so much personal information is revealed to strangers without the Facebook author aware of it. Even if one uses the most stringent settings, who is to regulate what friends of one's friend are reading over-the-shoulder? I gave this up almost as soon as I began it, as I could clearly sense the freedom other people could have with my pictures, dates, information and destinations. I wonder how long my past will be able to be retrieved from that short experience two years ago?

Wow, wow, wow! Kudos for you and your family for giving so much of your time, faith in the basic rights of human beings, and standing up to the inverted pyramid we call capitalism! Why should we be treated any differently than our wealthy for our rights to privacy? I love living in the U.S.,but have made it a priority to wean myself off of technology. No cable,no dish-we buy carefully chosen, high-quality movies with cash), my cellphone is OFF and only goes with me in the car for emergencies; groceries and incidentals are paid in cash. We did end up buying a new car after 12 years with a paid-off used one and will drive this one well after it is paid off, too. For my husband and I,getting off the grid means being selective in our long-lasting friendships, not giving out personal information to anyone, and enjoying time with family more. We are moving soon to a rural area where we can walk to just about anywhere we need merchandise or services, have a house paid for in cash, with independent options for utilities- naturally, we will opt for choices that don't require a paper trail. We are training our children to know about identity protection as well as self-sufficiency, what our forefathers simply understood as true freedom. We are not alone.
