How long are u bass strings?
These are the original strings that ship with the Kala U-basses, and have a great smooth feel. I rated these as a 4 because they are VERY hard to install. The are short and have to be stretched through the tuners at tension since they are all shorter that the 21″ scale length when not stretched.

Roughly the size of a baritone ukulele, the U-Bass has a slightly longer neck (a 21-inch scale versus a baritone uke’s 19-inch scale), and the mahogany neck, with 12 frets to the body, is stout, feeling much more like a full-size bass guitar neck than that of a ukulele.
Why do you boil bass strings?
Over time, bass strings get grime pushed into them. And no matter how often you clean your strings, once grime gets in there, it’s very difficult to get out. What boiling the strings does is simply loosen and release the grime you can’t get to.

Can you put regular strings on a Ubass?
They do however have a nylon core (rather than the steel core found in standard bass strings), so I’m concerned that using standard strings could damage the instrument somehow. I wouldn’t want the strings to feel too loose, so I’d either use a heavy gauge set of roundwounds (110-50) or simply use flatwounds.
