From 1932 to 1990 the city was known as Gorky (Го́рький), after the writer Maxim Gorky. Following the fall of the Soviet Union, the old name was restored. Do not confuse Nizhny Novgorod with Novgorod (or, fully, Veliky Novgorod), which is a different city.
