Why are UW students called Huskies?
Our beautiful region of the United States is called the Pacific Northwest. People often call our university the UW, which is pronounced “the you-dub”. We call ourselves Huskies, after our school mascot, Dubs.

Why are Dubs Malamutes?
The live Husky mascot at the University of Washington has traditionally been a malamute since the Husky mascot appeared thirteen doggie generations ago. The University’s stance is that malamutes are a large type of husky and they chose to use the breed because it is the largest and strongest of the huskies.
What does UW look for in a student?
In this process, the first thing we look at is academics. The UW’s curriculum is rigorous, and Admissions screens every applicant to make sure that he or she will be academically successful. To do this, we consider the courses a student has taken, the grades he or she earned and SAT/ACT scores.

Dubs I, cared for by a Seattle-area family, lived to be 12, from November 15, 2008 to April 3, 2021. The mascot retired two years ago and was the 13th in the series of dogs used to represent the university.

Can I get into UW with a 3.4 GPA?
Yes, but the list of public and private schools eligible for adjustment is pretty small. We have an adjustment factor based on how well other students from these rigorous schools have done once they are at the UW. For example, a 3.1 from one of these schools might be adjusted up to a 3.4 GPA.
