Schools compete against each other one at a time. In each weapon and gender, three fencers from each school fence three fencers on the opposing team in five-touch bouts. (Substitutions are allowed, so more than three fencers per squad can compete in a tournament.)

How many colleges have fencing teams in the NCAA?
In 2021/2022 academic year, 44 colleges in total have NCAA sanctioned fencing teams across Division 1, 2 and 3. There are 28 colleges in Division 1, 1 college in Division 2 and 15 college fencing teams in Division 3.
