How does a refrigerator timer work?

Posted on September 19, 2022 by Mary Andersen

How does a refrigerator timer work?

A defrost timer is nothing more than a motor-driven clock that opens and closes internal contacts that control the electric current flowing to the hermetically sealed compressor and to the defrost heating elements.

What are the components of fridge timer?

There are three logical components to check. Heater element, thermostat (located just above the evaporator) and a relay on the control board (located in the fridge control panel).

What are the terminals on a defrost timer?

The timer motor itself is powered by terminals 3-2 and X. There are 2 normally closed (NC) contacts and 1 normally open (NO) contact. The NC contacts are connected to the compressor and the evaporator fans and the NO contacts are connected to the defrost heater.

What happens when a defrost timer goes bad?

Faulty defrost timer If it goes bad and stops at cooling mode, it causes excessive frost to build up on the evaporator coils which reduces the air flow. Or when it stops at the defrost mode it melts all the frost and does not go back to the cooling cycle.

What happens if defrost sensor fails?

If the defrost heater assembly is defective, the defrost system will not work, and frost will continue to accumulate on the evaporator coils. To determine if the defrost heater is defective, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the defrost heater does not have continuity, replace it.

What is the purpose of a refrigerator protector circuit?

This simple refrigerator protector circuit is actually a delay ON timer circuit which makes sure that whenever a power failure occurs or in case abrupt power fluctuations take place, the refrigerator is never allowed to switch ON instantly, rather after a delay of a few moments.

How do I find the make and model of my fridge?

When you go into the store, have ready your make, model and serial number from the nameplate of the fridge (not from some sticker inside the fridge). If there is a B/M number on the nameplate, have that with you, too. The metal nameplate information is usually found in one of the places shown in Figure 1:

How do I Stop my Frigidaire refrigerator compressor from running?

7) You may stop the compressor from running using the defrost timer or cold control, by cutting off the power to the fridge, or simply by pulling the plug out of the wall. However, if you try to restart it within a few minutes, it may not start; you may hear buzzing and clicking noises.

Why does my Refrigerator keep switching on and off?

Today most modern refrigerators are equipped with a protection feature which prevents the fridge from suddenly switching ON or OFF due to sudden power fluctuations or a sudden power restoration.
