How often should you change fork oil on a motorcycle?

Posted on July 11, 2022 by Mary Andersen

How often should you change fork oil on a motorcycle?

So what’s a reasonable interval? For sportbikes, simple replacement of fluids and seals at 10,000 miles will bring new life to the bike. Touring bikes and cruisers can probably double that interval before the service will offer noticeable improvements. But whatever the interval, it’s certainly not “never.”

What is the difference between 10w and 15W fork oil?

Without looking up the difference in Centi-stokes, from a practical standpoint, the thicker oil slows down both compression and rebound. 15W would deliver a slightly less compliant ride, so, high-speed compression could feel more “jarring”, and a series of hard bumps would gradually “pack-down” the suspension travel.

Can you add fork oil through bleeder?

With the forks off the bike, take the air-bleed screw out of the fork cap. Turn the forks upside down and place a graduated cup (the syringe with the plunger removed works great) directly under the air-bleed screw hole. Gently compress the forks by hand to force oil out of the fork.

Which fork oil is best?

Castrol Fork Oil 20W is an advanced mineral based suspension fluid designed to provide superior damping performance in all on and off road suspensions.

Can I use 15w as fork oil?

No, you can’t but you can use motorcycle fork oil, which you can buy at any motorcycle shop.

Is ATF OK for fork oil?

ATF works great as a fork oil. It is relatively light weight, 2-5 W and rather unpredictable. If you need to use more than 1 bottle it might be a good idea to premix the stuff to isolate any bottle to bottle differences. I’ve also heard that Dextron fluid has lubricating properties that the other stuff may not have.

Can I use motor oil in my forks?

Check the manual for your forks though. Yer 130ml of 5wt in dampers and a 20/30ml of 15wt every where else. If you want to ruin the performance of your damper, by all means use motor oil in there. Use shock oil for anything that is damping, and motor oil for the splash oil in the lowers.

How good is the Suzuki gsx-r1300 Hayabusa?

If it had been a sharp engine, you could put some hits, but the Suzuki GSX-R1300 Hayabusa 1999 offered the contrary, a power curve without doubt, really linear, with a pair of over 12 mkg All speed range reached almost 15 mkg at its peak.

What is the correct fork oil height?

The stock fork oil height is listed as 101mm. This does seem a bit high to me. I would probably run it closer to 120mm myself. Don’t measure it by oil volume, its not reliable since unless you are dismantling the fork you very likely did not purge the cartidge of all the old oil that was still in there.

How do I clean the oil out of my fork?

Hold the bottom of the fork between your feet and then grab the top of the fork and yank it up and down a good several time. This will create a vacuum inside the fork pull the oil and purge the air out of the cartridge alot faster and quicker.

What level syringe to use for fork seals?

A level syringe is only like $15 and a must if you do your own fork seals. 101mm is the level i set my 06 to and is what the manual suggests so i don’t question it! What I do: if the forks are known to be the right oil height etc. already…
