Can MGUS turn into lymphoma?

Treatment and follow-up for MGUS MGUS does not usually need treatment as it rarely causes any symptoms. In most people, MGUS remains stable and never causes any problems. There is a small risk of MGUS developing into a cancer, such as myeloma or lymphoma. If this happens, it can cause certain symptoms.

How quickly does MGUS progress?

Plasma cell MGUS is stable but can sporadically progress to multiple myeloma (MM) at an average rate of about 1% per year.

Does MGUS shorten your life?

Bottom line: Patients with MGUS have a shorter life expectancy than the general population, and the IgM subtype is associated with a greater risk of progression at 20 years, compared with the non-IgM subtype.

What happens when MGUS progresses?

A new study suggests that a person’s risk of progressing from a benign condition called monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) to multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, can change over time. On average, about 1% of people with MGUS go on to develop multiple myeloma each year.

How long does it take for MGUS to turn into multiple myeloma?

Citing data from the Mayo Clinic, Bhutani noted that the risk of progression from SMM to multiple myeloma is approximately 10% per year for the first five years, and then drops to 3% per year for the next five years. Beyond 10 years, the risk drops to around 1%, the same for a patient with MGUS.

What can MGUS lead to?

Light chain MGUS (LC-MGUS). The diseases triggered by MGUS may cause bone fractures, blood clots, and kidney problems over time. These complications can make managing the condition and treating any associated diseases more challenging.

Can you donate blood with MGUS?

In our experience permanent deferral of regular blood donors with MGUS is likely to cause a reduction of about 1% of blood donations. This should be justified by evidence of potential harm to the donor or to the blood component recipient.

What causes MGUS to progress?

Doctors and scientists aren’t sure exactly what causes MGUS. It’s thought that certain genetic changes and environmental factors may affect whether a person develops this condition. What doctors do know is that MGUS causes abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow to produce M protein.

Does MGUS weaken your immune system?

The underlying factors in a weakened immune response in MGUS and MM are as yet not fully understood. A confounding factor is the onset of normal aging, which quantitatively and qualitatively hampers humoral immunity to affect response to infection and vaccination.
